A breif lesson on the world of video games (Timeline)

For those of you (like me) who appreciate a good video game when they see's it and have taken it upon yourself to learn more about the history of video gaming in the shortest briefest way possible then welcome. If, much more likely, you're doing the same course as me and have clicked on this blog by a complete boredom drive, then welcome all the same, whatever's in the fridge is yours.

1974
See's the release of the home ports of Atari's incredibly popular tennis brick block game: Pong, a game so incredibly popular it had to have at-least 70 billion consoles dedicated to just it. This would mark the very start of gaming appearing in the home and the rain of home gaming would not stop there.

1978
The year of the invaders (most commonly from space), released by Tatio, spaced invaders saw the player taking control of a little gun and shooting down aliens before they could hit the bottom of the screen. Although very simple, the game would begin to speed up the more aliens were killed giving the player a sense of urgency and then pride when they finally plucked the last little bugger from the sky, saving the world and all it's non-ground based weaponry.

1980
The year the video game took a leap into the future, with the release of the first 3D video game ever; Battlezone. A game of tanks killing other tanks with their tanks, Battlezone (created by our friends at Atari) was the very first game take the idea of a 3D world in a game and put a tank in it. And what a success it was.

1985
Welcome to the year you; as a gamer, should remember and praise and love forever; The year the first Mario game ever came to a home console and stomped his way into our hearts, colon number three. Created by Nintendo to tie in with the release of their new 8-bit console, super Mario brothers quickly became one of the most memorable, best, and recognizable games in known history, and to this day is still one of the most sold games ever, for it's simple story, simple controls, amazing music, memorable characters and awesome gameplay. Men wanted it, girls wanted to be it, everyone tired to steal it and everyone loved it.

 1989
If you were alive at this point and playing video games did you think puzzle games were too hard and no fun ? Алексей Леонидович Пажитнов most certainly did and decided to take it upon himself to create one of the best puzzle games ever, based on the Greek word 'tetra' (pretty much the number 4) Tetris had it for the player to connect shapes consisting of nothing but 4 blocks to make a line, when the line was complete said line would vanish, leaving behind points for the player. With it's incredibly simple controls and scoring system Tetris quickly became one of the most popular puzzle games ever created and has sold out more then George Lucas.

 1991
Things for Nintendo seem to be going well, they have money and are probably the only video game company with an official mascot. Sega apparently did not care for all this success that Nintendo were having, (I know right ?) and decided to create their own mascot, with their own soundtracks and their own gameplay. And so with that, Sonic the hedgehog was born, given a pair of shoes and made to run circles around Mario, and it worked for the most part. A fresh new face, and intense new fast paced  gameplay not seen before to this degree, sonic managed to claim his own in the the video game world. And is also now one of the most recognisable blue hedgehogs out there to date.

1995
This year saw the release of the benchmark of 3D gaming, the play station. The play station would go on to release several amazing games over the course of its life (which lasted longer than the original Xbox mind you) such as metal gear solid and Crash bandicoot. But in the sweet summer of ’99 the first game ever to use analog sticks solely was released for the play station, the controller even had to have a re-design to be able to play it, and the worst part is; “you’ve probably never heard of it” – every hipster ever. That game of course is Ape escape a game of catching monkeys, using the left stick to run and the right stick to swing the current item and (if it means anything) it's one of my favourite games ever, and the game that changed how games were controlled forever.

 1996 - 2001
Throughout these years that I'm too lazy to give individual posts to, gaming pretty much became the biggest source of entertainment on the market ,with big named console arriving with their big named games in a big way.. big. These year saw the release of the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and the next play station; the play station 2. Along the course of these releases, consoles gave us amazing 3D games like Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, golden eye, nights into dreams, jet set radio, Metal gear solid ,Metal gear solid 3 and probably about 600 billion more, most of which were amazing and are being re-released as HD remixes today. Mainly because video game companies today have no idea what a game is if it doesn't have a gun or level up system in it, the games in this era are commonly on people lists of best games ever, due to the fact that these probably are the best games ever.

 2001-2005
Marks the year of the Xbox, and all it's amazingly fun shooters and adventure games. Until 4 years later then the Xbox 360 came out and it started to go down hill, but that's a story for another sentence. The original Xbox took the idea of an online experience for consoles and refined it into something workable, this became the revolution of a thing we as gamers like to call; Xbox live. The biggest game that utilized the Live function to it's fullest was the space face squatting simulator; Halo 2, the game was so popular bungee simply had to release another, for the Xbox 360 of course. The Xbox 360 was the start of a new generation of console, having the best graphics and specs for a console and an online function nicely available to all the l33t MLG pro12 year old's who got hold of call of duty 4 and 5 and all the others. What a nice day and age we live in for online gaming.

 2006
The Nintendo -Wii don't need no fancy controllers to run our god damn games because we're Nintendo,  came out in '06 (sonic 06 also came out this year.. but we don't talk about that anymore)
and it brought with it an entire new wave of motion control gameplay, the tie-in game Wii sports was really only made for bragging rights, oh and to get people to be fit and not die of blood clots and blah blah blah. The Wii really held it's own (like every Nintendo product ever made or ever will be made)  and released some of the most revolutionary games seen when it was in it's prime (come along way from Atari ain't we ?) The age of motion control would later be stolen by Sony with their PlayStation move, and Microsoft would go the way of the eyetoy thinking it's never been done before.

 2009
A short year now, the year the stupidly popular, stupidly simple and concept released so many times before it's stupidly stupid. And if you haven't grasped the game from my incredibly intelligent description of it I am of course talking about angry birds. It's a flash game with a price tag on it, 'nuff said.

2011-2012-To infinity and beyond
As you can tell from my cleverly thought up toy story reference, this last paragraph will cover 2011, the year we live in and what we can expect to be delayed in the year we live in. Starting off with Nintendo putting out their new DS models including the incredibly amazing headache inducing 3DS, Nintendo saw the film industry release the glasses for the new 3D movies and thought; 'lets instantly find the technology to get rid of those glasses and stick it on a handheld' and so they did, changing everything, and then came the amazing old games in 3D land; like The legend of Zelda: The ocarina of time and metal gear solid 3, and squeals that haven't come out yet, such as Luigi's mansion dark moon and animal crossing 3D where animals rule the planet and wear people clothes and silently judge you. Call of duty is slowly dying a well deserved death from staying here too long, and the giant TD-VS is arriving (or the Wii-u as it seems to be referred to now). With it's weird scanning technology and giant screen controller with it's amazing graphics better then any console ever that no doubt Microsoft and Sony are already planning to go all PAYDAY: the heist on their asses for it. the next few years are looking to be great for console gaming, I for one am looking forward to seeing how stupid the accents will be in Zombie-U and how terribly hard pikmin 3 is going to get near the end of the game when we have to fight about 7 bosses at once with 4 separate captains, and I hope you're looking forward to those aspects as-well. Or the fact that episode 3 is no where in sight. Either way you learned something about new about video games today, and if you didn't then you just wasted 10 minuets and you can never get it back.

now go outside and get some well earned sunlight.
